Article summary

Aligning the Headset

After any adjustments to improve the signal, check the front of the headset to make sure it is still in an appropriate position on the forehead. The bottom of the Frontal Plate should touch the top of the participant’s eyebrows, and the Placement Marker should be centered between the eyebrows and in line with the bridge of the nose.

NOTE:
Make sure you are facing the participant head-on when checking the alignment on the forehead. If viewed from the side or from an angle, the headset may look centered even though it is not.

Tightening the Headset

As a final step before recording neural data, the Tension Dial can be adjusted to ensure the light sources and detectors are securely nestled against the participant’s scalp. When properly configured, the headset should remain comfortable, yet stably affixed to the participant’s head throughout the session. Once the headset is configured and aligned, turn the Tension Dial clockwise to tighten it.

NOTE:
Always rely on the participant to tell you when the headset has just begun to feel snug to stop tightening. An over-tightened headset can become uncomfortable over time, even if it is initially tolerable. Tighter headsets do not necessarily improve data quality.
