Article summary

The DevKit system comprises a number of physical components. Thereference design DevKit consists of a neoprene cap with a pre-arranged set of 12 module sockets, which are connected to a microcontroller Hub (to be housed on a backpack when data is being collected from a human). The headset sits on a specially-designed Headset Stand. Each socket can hold a Flow2 module, which is secured by a locking feature. Any module can be put in any socket, and individual USB-C to USB-C module cables connect each module to the Hub. See Setting up the DevKit Cables for detailed instructions on cabling the system.

Additionally, thereference design cap contains 6 pre-arranged EEG electrodes. These are to be connected to the Hub with the 6 provided USB-C to 3.5-mm jack EEG cables. Finally, a Reference and Bias lead are provided, each with a 3.5-mm jack on one end and earlobe clip on the other end.

NOTE:

You can create a cap of your own configuration (up to 12 modules) if the reference design cap does not fit your needs. Please contact Kernel Support for instructions if interested in this option.

Every active module has three light sources, each of which consists of two laser diodes (operating at visible 690nm, and infrared 905nm wavelengths respectively), as well as six optical detectors capable of measuring individual photons. The light sources and detectors are spring-loaded and are designed to compress slightly when resting on the head so that they can comb through the hair. Each module has a circular foam pad in the center to increase comfort.

The Hub contains these ports:

  • USB-C connector for the Flow Power/Data Cable, which connects the Hub to power and to the data acquisition computer
  • 12 USB-C connectors for connecting each of up to 12 modules to the Hub
  • 6 EEG input connectors to attach up to 6 EEG electrodes
  • 1 REF and 1 BIAS input connector to connect the 2 external EEG leads. (To learn more, see Connecting the EEG Components)
